Divorce and Children — Protecting Your Child
If you are considering divorce, it won't be easy to tell your children. However, there are a few things to keep in mind to prepare them for what's to come:
- Tell your children together — This is not a "mom issue" or a "dad issue". You are a family, so tell your children together. Be honest with them, inform them of any temporary lifestyle changes, and stress that no matter what, the impending divorce is not their fault.
- Listen to your children — Children of all ages can have difficulty expressing their emotions, especially when dealing with divorce. Remember to listen to your children's concerns, answer their questions, and provide all the support they need in a difficult time.
- Keep your children out of the middle — Divorce is between you and your spouse. It is not uncommon for a child to feel as though he or she somehow caused the divorce. Protect your child in this emotional time.
- Maintain normality in your child's life — Divorce is a time of change, but initially it is important to try to keep your child on the same daily schedule.
- Attempt to work together — However difficult your divorce is, it is important to put your differences aside and work together for the sake of your children

There are a lot of family attorneys that will do anything to "win" a divorce and child custody case. Many lawyers are willing to fight to the bitter end to reach the outcome their clients think they want.
I approach my family law cases a little differently. I do what is best for each child involved, to the best of my knowledge and ability. Whatever issues parents may have with each other should be kept between them and their attorneys.
